Shawerma Nazi
Wednesday, January 9, 2008
For a couple of days C had mentioned a shawerma place that was the best ever, and we finally got to sample Vancouver's best shawerma. We park our car, and walk along a mall to a little hole in the wall called aptly, Abdul's Shawerma, and well there's Abdul and it's just him. There are about two Asians, two Canucks, and two middle easterners (kinda like Noah's ark) already eating or having already ordered.
Since we have two fast tongued senoritas our order was uttered a bit quicker than it could be interpreted. We wanted one mild chicken shawerma, one medium chicken shawerma sans tomato, one hot lamb shewerma sans tomato and one medium lamb shawerma. The order went something like:
Girls: One chicken shawerma, another chicken shawerma, one mild, one medium, One lamb shawerma, hot, another lamb shewerma. Oh and make the first no tomatoes.Abdul writes something down on paper using a pen with no ink - just invisible indentations into the paper, in Arabic of course.
Abdul: OK.At this point the Canadians behind us are smiling and we're not sure if we're getting anything. But through it all Abdul was still smiling, just a little overwhelmed. We then got our order placed in orderly fashion. After he had our order correctly imprinted, he set out to make the food and the phone rang. He answered and said,
Girls: Oh, wait make one no tomatoes.
Abdul: OK - one hot lamb shawerma no tomatoes and one mild lamb shawerma.
Sinziana: Honicito, you're getting mild lamb, I thought you wanted medium.
Mark: Medium lamb.
Sinziana: medium lamb - MP: chicken no tomatoes
Abdul: You want six shawermas?
Girls: No. Just four.
Abdul (dropping pen and putting hands on his head): Wait. I'm still on lamb.
Call back later - I have to make food [pause] Yes I will open for you.We got our order as desired. And the food was worth it.
