My greenness has been challenged
Thursday, October 9, 2008

Here of late I have been getting about 48 mpg on the Prius, which is below our 50 mpg we used to get when we were trying more to be fuel efficient and well below my personal best of 54 mpg for one tank of gas (512 miles).
Then a former coworker of mine who has owned Mustangs, has a limited edition Shelby Cobra, F-150 and nearly bought a Hummer H3 two years ago, buys a Prius (over a hybrid Civic because its got more gitty up) and brags about getting 52 mpg! Here's a Prius who's bumper sticker would read "McCain's too liberal." And he's beating me! Now he has some inherent advantages: longer commute (20+ miles each way - shorter commutes are less efficient for any vehicle) and on the highway coasting at 45-50 mph in the HOV lane (carpooling with the wife).
My challenge - beat 52 mpg this tank of gas on a 7 mile one-way commute with a strict photo enforced speed limit of 40 mph. Getting 50+ mpg is easy on a single drive, but I'll have to do it for over a month to empty the tank. Its a marathon.
So far, 250 miles --> 55.0 mpg --> fuel gauge still reads 7/10ths full.
