My Big Fat Greek Festival
Monday, October 15, 2007
This weekend was the annual Greek Fest. Even though its just on the other side of the mountain from us and we drive nearby each day on the way to work, it was a bit of an adventure to find. We though Bethany Home Rd was take us there from 24th St. Well BH doesn't exactly go straight through. Despite being in the geometric center of Phoenix, we ended up zig-zagging along BH, flood irrigation canals, dirt roads, hidden away mansions and an orchard (in a half mile stretch), all the while never finding our destination via Bethany Home Rd.
But we did find the stark white Greek Orthodox church eventually.
We also saw our doorbell bread bandit neighbor. He is an older gent with a thick accent and an even thicker beard, and he drops off loaves of bread at our door every couple of weeks.
Anyway, we saw him and waved.....and waved again....and again until finally he started looking around him like, " who are those kids waving at..what do they want?" SO, we walked over to him, and reintroduced ourselves, at which point he recognized us.
He asked us our names, and upon hearing "Sinziana" he jumped into the father figure from the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
Him: "Ah, that name is French!"
S: "Actually it is Romanian, but I am from Ecuador - South America."
Him: "Ah, South America - there are Greeks in South America - greek power yes?
S: "...Yes there are."
And then he sprayed us with Windex.
After being windexed, we ate some traditional greek food, Spanakopita, tiropitas, Patates Tiganites (greasy potatoes) and Pastitsio. While we waited for the heavy food to settle we watch some kids perform some traditional greek dances that they learned in greek school.
