Camping at Woods Canyon Like...kinda

Well this last weekend we headed out to meet some friends for camping at Woods Canyon Lake, about 30 miles east of Payson. Since all of the reservable campsites were, well, reserved, we had 4 candidates that were first-come, first-serve. Unfortunately those were all taken, so we ended up in Rim campsite as opposed to be being closer to the Lake. But I think it worked out pretty well since as the campsite host told us we had the "prettiest" view of the Mogollon Rim. After taking the 5 minute trail to the foretold lookout, we couldn't disagree.

Now this was 'our' first car camping trip with veteran car campers. We were quickly called out on our non-car-camping ways: We had no air mattresses, no pre-marinated steaks, no watermelon, two tiny coolers, no ice cream maker, and we forgot the kitchen sink. The last extended camping trip we took was in Colorado - we got five people and their gear into a sedan - now that's space saving.

We're used to camping light, pseudo-backpacker style. Get up, get a power bar, and be gone (doing some sort of activity that takes all day). Car camping is all about preparing food, eating the food, and then cleaning up. Somewhere in between, people hang out. Next time we'll be true car campers, chow down, and just relax. And bring Lulu.

Pretty cool! Glad you got away from Phoenix heat. Food taste better outdoors, but roughing is cool, too.
